Students unfamiliar with taking a course online, or even with incorporating online material into the usual classroom structure, need lots of guidance and reassurance.
The administrative pages need to inform students of the mundane yet necessary tasks of taking a course, registration, test taking, etc.
- registration area should be procedure oriented
- provide a step-by-step checklist so students know when they have finished registering
- provide a phone number or e-mail so students can reach someone in case of problems
- provide a syllabus that identifies the assignments
- indicate how much weight each assignment carries in the grading system
- provide due dates for the assignments
- indicate evaluation criteria for assignments
- indicate what physical books or other online resources they will need
- provide the rules of the classroom in reference to plagiarism, late work, make-up tests, etc.
- provide tips on searching the Net
- provide common rules of netiquette for students who are new to surfing and using the Internet for communicating
