Try It! Survey - Getting There From Here

Different kinds of writing serve different purposes. Preparation for writing includes determining the purpose of your piece. In most college classes, your instructor will do that for you, but there will be other situations where you will have to make that decision yourself. Are you writing to the editor of a newspaper to express your opinion about a controversial topic? Are you writing a resume in order to compete for a new job? Are you preparing a speech for your organization's fund raiser? In each instance, your language, your tone, your organization and structure are all functions of the writing's purpose. In order to practice approaching the same topic from different perspectives and different writing styles, consider the following topic:

The use of cell phones while driving can be dangerous.

In the boxes below, you will write introductions only, to three proposed papers on the topic, following the goals and purposes outlined.

a. A research paper detailing the effects of cell phone use on safety while driving

b. A reasoned argument persuading state legislators to vote against a bill banning the use of cell phones while driving

c. An advertisement from an organization trying to promote the banning of cell phones while driving
