Try It! Survey - Testing the Test
Testing is a common occurrence in our lives. Tests measure the amount of moisture in the clouds, the level of sugar in our food, the level of platelets in our blood, our molecular structure, our hearing, our sight, our humor. So it should come as no surprise that throughout our school years, tests are a necessary part of measuring learning. What may come as a surprise is how we feel about testing.
I. The table located here lists various characteristics of instructor-constructed (not standardized) tests used in the higher education curriculum and the potential attitudes of test takers. Simply mark whether you agree or disagree with the statement. When you submit your choices, you will see a graph that measures the attitudes of all who take the survey. Later you will be asked to comment on your feelings about tests.
| After taking the survey, see below! |
You agreed with XXXXX odd-numbered statements and you agreed with XXXXX even-numbered statements
If you agreed with the odd-numbered statements, and disagreed with the even-numbered statements you have a fairly healthy attitude about tests and their place in your college life. You recognize the value of being prepared and can put the results of any individual test into perspective. That doesn't mean, however, that test taking is a breeze for you, but you recognize that tests are valuable to the instructor and to you in assessing how much of the material you have understood.
If you agreed with the even-numbered statements and disagreed with the odd-numbered statements, you haven't yet learned to handle tests as part of the educational experience. They, instead, handle you. But there is a way to understand the value of tests. Perhaps you need to read or re-read the text material that corresponds to the characteristics:
Preparing for the test p.142
Knowing test question types p.144
Dealing with test anxiety p.146
Strategies for taking the test p.150
