| 2. Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality includes the interactions of the id, ego, and superego. The id represents a person's basic instinctual drives, which unconsciously and impulsively seek immediate pleasure. The id contains Eros (sexual) and Thanatos (aggressive) instincts and obtains energy from the libido. The superego consists of the societal values that have been instilled into a person (conscience). The ego consists of a conscious faculty for perceiving and dealing with reality. |
