| Before conditioning, the unconditioned stimulus (US) of meat elicits the unconditioned response (UR) of salivation from the dog. The neutral stimulus (NS), the sound of a tone, elicits an orienting response, but does not cause the dog to salivate. During conditioning, the conditioned stimulus (CS), the tone is presented immediately before the US. After several pairings, the tone (CS) alone elicits the conditioned response (CR). During extinction, when the US meat has been removed, the CS (tone) becomes less and less effective in eliciting the CR. In spontaneous recovery , after a rest period, the CS is again briefly able to elicit the CR. |
