| The gate-control theory may provide possible insights into the ancient Oriental art of acupuncture and why it may be successful in controlling pain. Through centuries of practice and tradition, practitioners of acupuncture may have discovered the areas of the body where needles can be inserted and somehow cause the pain-control gates to close. It is currently believed that acupuncture can stimulate the production of endorphins in the brain, which in turn inhibit the pain-carrying neurons of the spinal cord (He, 1987). |
