CHALLENGE QUESTIONS
After you have mastered the basic concepts from this chapter, you might want to try some of these challenge activities, designed to help you better understand the material and apply what you have learned to your daily life.

IDENTIFICATION
1. Describe Piaget's periods of cognitive development and show how this theory can be used in elementary school education or child rearing.
2. Review Erikson's psychosocial stages of development, and discuss the relevance of the stages to adjustment.
3. Identify each of the major research studies discussed in this chapter and state why each is important in developmental psychology.

APPLICATION
4. Visit a local nursery school and observe several groups of different-aged children as they play. What can you conclude about the development of play from your observations?
5. Take a sheet of paper and divide it into ten sections. Write 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 at the top of each section. Consider these age periods, and write a description of each period. In other words, what are the main characteristics of the period from birth to ten years,etc. Compare your answers to information in the text and with other students. Are there any stereotypes included? Does it make a difference if you know someone that age?

EVALUATION
6. Explain why developmental psychology has become more life-span oriented in recent years.
7. How does an understanding of development aid psychologists in other subfields?
8. What is the most important problem facing developmental psychologists today? Why?
