| 8. The peripheral nervous system includes all the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. The somatic nervous system carries messages from the sense organs to the central nervous system and relays information directing the voluntary movements of the skeletal muscles. The autonomic nervous system connects the central nervous system with the endocrines and the involuntary internal organ muscles. It is divided into the sympathetic nervous system, more active in emergencies, and parasympathetic nervous system, which functions more in normal circumstances. |
