CHALLENGE QUESTIONS
After you have mastered the basic concepts from this chapter, you might want to try some of these challenge activities, designed to help you better understand the material and apply what you have learned to your daily life.

IDENTIFICATION
1. Explain how information is carried through the nervous system, describing each of the parts of a neuron in turn.
2. What functions do each of the major structures of the brain serve?
3. Outline the branches of the peripheral nervous system and describe how each branch operates.

APPLICATION
4. Keep a record of your heart rate at various times and in different situations. When does the sympathetic nervous system dominate? Does your heart rate differ in response to excitement, fear, anxiety, happiness or anger? What does this suggest?
5. Visit the biology department to view brains from various animals. If possible, handle a model of the human brain to get the feel of where the parts of the brain are located.
6. Interview an animal breeder to learn how animals are selected for breeding.
7. Interview identical and nonidentical twins to determine how their environment might contribute to their behavior. Are identical twins treated identically by parents and friends?

EVALUATION
8. Choose a specific behavior and describe how heredity and the environment interact to influence this behavior. Which is more important in determining behavior?
9. Why are psychologists becoming more interested in psychobiology? Of what value is this field to other areas in psychology?
